Top tips for hiring a skip in 2022

We all have big aspirations at the start of a New Year, and one of the most common types of resolutions is to make important changes that we’ve been putting off.

So, whether you want to Marie Kondo your whole house or put in that new kitchen you’ve been dreaming of, have you considered hiring a skip?

At Leyland Skip Hire, we offer efficient waste removal services in the surrounding region, including skip hire in Chorley. Should you need to dispose of more waste than your council bin collections can handle, then we’re the ones you can turn to for help.

Before you jump into booking a skip, though, we think it’s important to walk you through some of the things you’ll need to think about to get the most out of your skip hire.

Our team is full of expertise when it comes to top tips for skip hire, so if you follow the considerations below, then it’s sure to happen without a hitch!

How big does the skip need to be?

Getting the right skip size for the amount of waste you need to get rid of is crucial. Too small, and you might have to hire another skip. Too big, and you’re paying for more space than you need.

We offer several sizes of domestic skips, providing the perfect waste container for a variety of small jobs and large clearances or renovations.

The smallest is a 2-yard skip, which holds around 25 bin bags. If this mini skip isn’t quite big enough, the next size is a 4-yard skip – this midi skip holds around 50 bin bags.

Our largest domestic skip is also the largest size that can legally go on a public road, which is an 8-yard skip. This one can hold around 100 bin bags of rubbish.

A skip can generally hold up to 1 tonne of waste per cubic yard, but as you can’t really weigh the contents of your skip, it’s best to go by eye – and don’t go over the skip’s fill line.

Do you need a permit to put the skip on a road?

Thinking about where you can put the skip is also important. If you’re worried about whether a skip will fit in your driveway, you can contact us to request measurements so you can check.

If you don’t own private land with a suitable space to store a skip, or have permission from an owner who does, then your other option is to keep the skip on the nearest public road.

Many people find it easier to set a skip on the road right in front of their property, but this does require a skip permit from the council responsible for the area.

While we can apply for the skip licence for you, it does come at an additional cost, and can also take a few working days to process. This isn’t always ideal for last-minute bookings.

The skip permit price varies according to the area and the duration of hire. Whether you need a permit or not, you must make sure the truck can access the site to deliver and collect your skip.

When do you need the skip?

While we aim to provide a skip within 24-48 hours (working days only) when you book for delivery as soon as possible, this depends on availability.

Demand for skip hire is higher at certain times of the year, so you should make sure that you’ll get the skip you want, when you want it, by booking in advance.

Since we can’t deliver skips that need permits until the council issues them, this can also cause delays, so don’t leave it too late if you know you’ll need a skip permit.

It’s a good idea to schedule the skip delivery around the same time as you’ll be starting work on your clear-out or construction project, so you don’t have waste lying around.

This also gives you the chance to prepare for the skip arriving by getting any other equipment you need and booking time off work for the project (if you have to).

How long do you need the skip for?

Unfortunately, you can’t hire a skip indefinitely. One payment covers you for a hire period of up to 2 weeks (or up to 3 weeks, if it’s an 8-yard skip).

You can call to request a collection before the end of the hire period if you finish early, but what will you do if you still haven’t finished by the time collection is due?

You’ll have to find another way to get rid of the waste later, or make another payment to extend your skip hire – even if you only need the skip for another day or two.

Booking ahead and planning a timeframe for your project will help you to avoid this problem. It also gives you a chance to estimate how much waste you’ll produce, so you can choose the best skip size.

Remember that you need to contact our office to arrange collection when you’re ready for us to pick up the skip – we won’t come to collect it automatically.

What will you be putting in the skip?

Most types of domestic waste can go in a skip, from furniture and toys to green waste and rubble. However, some types of waste are classed as hazardous materials.

You’re prohibited from putting hazardous waste in a skip because it poses a health risk to anyone in the vicinity of the skip or handling its contents after collection.

This includes anything highly flammable or explosive, and organic or biological waste. Here’s a quick list of most of the things that aren’t safe to put in a skip:

  • Tyres
  • Food and drinks
  • Medical waste
  • Mattresses
  • Asbestos and plasterboard
  • Aerosols and gas cylinders
  • Light bulbs and fluorescent tubes
  • Electrical appliances and batteries
  • Oils, solvents, and paints
  • Chemicals and fuels

This means you can’t put an old TV or fridge in a skip, for example – you’d have to take them to a dedicated WEEE recycling facility instead.

Try not to overload your skip with heavy waste, or allow the contents to rise over the edges, because we may not be able to load it onto the truck to transport it.
